"Pet parents" is an upcoming trend in most pet owners’ society. Pets' health and well-being are highly cared for, thus becoming the main idea of the renovation proposal for Small Animal Teaching Hospital and Pet Wellness Center of Chulalongkorn University. The purpose is to create a new organization image that is more welcoming and comforting, to reassure pet owners that hospitals are not just a place to cure diseases or something intimidating, but it is a place where pets are well-cared for, both physically and mentally. Moreover, the mental well-being of the owners and working staff are in consideration as well through the concept of space, shelter, transparency, and dynamisms.
The programs included medical services with separated areas designed for each species, a pet shop and cafe with products from the faculty's innovation and research, a pet-friendly library for public guests, and a wellness center for canines and felines.
At present, majority of pet owners consider their pets as a part of their family, reflecting the upcoming "pet parents" trend, in which the owners treat their pets as their children while placing high importance on pet's health and well-being both physically and mentally. As one of the leading veterinary institution and hospital in Thailand, the Small Animal Teaching Hospital of Chulalongkorn University has set its goals to expand healthcare services to and enhancing organization growth to meet pet owners' expectation and international standard.
According to the reasons above, this project aims to explore possibilities in improving physical resources in architectural aspect to create an organization image where professionality meets comfort. Creating spaces that heal not only physical sickness but can improve the mental well-being of both people and animals. Adapting the concept of "Space" and "Shelter", treatment areas are treated as the shelter where pets are protected and cure, while waiting area acts as the space where they can relaxed in. The concept of transparency is also used to create visual connection between owners, pets and working staff at various levels, with the aim of making the owners that their beloved pets are being treated with care and to create a dynamic working environment for staff and students.
Facility for learning environment and education is also considered. Examination rooms and treatment rooms are larger to accommodate student's group observe session. The project also includes learning and knowledge facility for public.
The design intents to create healing environments to help relief stress for pet owners and staff by integrating greenery and adequate natural light into every space, as well as some playful gimmick such as animal graphics and decoration. Stress in animals is prevented by organizing separate area for each species — canines, felines, avians, reptiles, and rodents — especially in high-traffic areas such as central registration and medical department, with environmental design to accommodate their normal behavior.
