The old town of Phuket is well-known in the cultural tourism sector, which has seen a resurgence after encountering COVID-19. This led to a significant decrease in mass tourism, with many hotels, including the first hotel, The Memory at on on, suffering heavy impacts and losing a large number of customers. Currently, the Phuket government is seeking sustainable tourism, one of which involves attracting digital nomads or slomads who appreciate peace, tranquility, and immersion in culture as they seek to be part of the community. Consequently, The Memory at on on has transformed its image into a contemporary hotel, blending traditional Phuket culture with the new lifestyle of slomads, thus becoming On On People Hotel.
Due to being part of a continuous welcoming area stemming from the façade, the prominently visible elements, such as the arched door frame, are intentionally disproportionate to signify freedom from the notion of blending old concepts with the beloved free-spirited lifestyle of slomads residents. The reception counters are strategically placed at the center, welcoming guests' gaze upon entry. The floor features tiles with patterns derived from oxidized Veronese marble to give a contemporary look, while the ceiling expands the arched door frame into lines resembling digital streams, directing guests' attention inward, aiming to communicate the modern, digital era-appropriate Peranakan identity.
This section is a continuation of the reception area. As SoHo residents tend to work everywhere, this area is designed for relaxed work yet still promotes good health, avoiding office syndrome. Therefore, the furniture here is chosen to allow both work and relaxation, encouraging slomads residents to adapt their own lifestyle. In this area, the arched door frame is utilized to reduce and create a partition separating the main traffic between the old and new buildings, preventing external visitors and hotel guests from mingling.
Since this is an outdoor area, lighting is used on the ceiling and on the fan parts, and lightweight materials are chosen for the ceiling area to allow light to pass through and create a relaxing atmosphere where the light interacts with the water and the ceiling. The seating area on the side alternates with curved arches to symbolize freedom, and a variety of tiles are used. Orange furniture is used, contrasting with green, inspired by the color tones of the Peranakan houses, which feature complementary colors.
In the area around the rooms located in the central courtyard of the building, curved lines are used in the design to represent modernity while also integrating with the existing arched doorways of the Peranakan-style house.
The first type of room is pool access room. Inside this room type, there's a continuous line design symbolizing digital connectivity. Side glass doors are inspired by the Shino-Portuguese house doors, modernized by using glass material and emphasized with a green frame. The headboard area features a line derived from the word "On," creating a chill and liberating atmosphere tailored to the customers' preferences. Only a single clothes rack is provided for hanging clothes, as guests typically don't carry many clothes during their stay.
Due to the issue of the old building's enclosed and quiet nature, characterized by its beautiful white façade, there was a need to address this problem. One solution was to angle the counters to face the central entrance of the building, allowing people passing by to easily access it.
The design concept for the old building's side differs from that of the new building. It aims to introduce a vibrant cultural restaurant showcasing Peranakan cuisine. Taking inspiration from the unique charm of the Peranakan-style building, with its distinctive feature being local spices that provide a spicy and flavorful taste, such as galangal, ginger, lemongrass, kaffir lime, and turmeric. These ingredients are overused to create a concept for the restaurant called "Blend on food taste."
In the bar area, there's a concept aimed at conveying the historical origins of the hotel from its pre-port city era. This bar is designed with the concept of a modern-era galley under the theme "Blend On the Water." The atmosphere is akin to sitting on a merchant ship, arriving to trade in this area during twilight, evoking the ambiance of the hotel's past during the port city era.
"On the Moment Spa ," in this section, will be positioned at the rear of the building due to its secluded and private nature within the layout of the old building. The concept revolves around wanting to be in harmony with the present moment and oneself, thus giving rise to the concept of "On the Moment." Being situated in the old building, the layout of this area will be balanced, utilizing curved lines inspired by Peranakan tile patterns. The reception area will be surrounded by curved walls, resembling a comforting embrace that envelops us.
Coworking spaces in the old building feature open ceilings and exposed beams to showcase the roof structure. These spaces are designed with zones for relaxed and free work, using orange hues to promote relaxation. Furniture that can be easily moved and adjusted according to users' needs is incorporated. Additionally, the space is surrounded by cushions to help dampen external noise, creating a tranquil environment conducive to focused work.
