Currently, there are over 1,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in Bangkok. These individuals come from different places and their stories are as diverse as the city itself. However, all of them share a common experience of facing daily challenges in their lives.

While government and organization efforts show signs of success, long-term solutions remain difficult. Homelessness is more than just a temporary refuge; it is about ensuring long-term stability.

In this context, more than 400 abandoned buildings emerge as a promising opportunity for solution. ‘A long-forgotten building to a new life-long neighborhood’ supports these empty spaces into revitalization places for the homeless, acknowledging it as a practical and effective approach to meet limitations of this project.

‘Baan Aun Jai’ aims to turn abandoned spaces into vibrant places of community and support. By using existing infrastructure, providing not only physical shelter but also a sense of belonging and empowerment to those in need.

Growing up in a compassionate, supportive atmosphere has made me aware of the privilege I’ve been given. However, when I began my studies in interior design, I always had the feeling that architecture often served just a select group of people, sometimes leaving marginalised groups disregarded. Despite this inequality, the Baan Aun Jai project aims to be one of the prototypes for meeting the housing requirements of marginalised groups. Especially the homeless.
Beginning with some basic research on the internet, which provided me with fundamental insights into the concept of homelessness. However, in-depth research with organisations that are committed to solving homelessness and directly interacting with persons who are experiencing it has broadened my perspective and also provided me with the ideas of the complexity and struggle that make a person become homeless. Through my research, I discovered that homelessness is not only caused by persistent poverty, but rather it usually occurs for many reasons, such as economic struggles, health crises or mental health.
This realisation changes my existing perspective and highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach to this project. Hence, I saw how important it was to find a suitable location that was affordable and efficient. I decided to choose an old parking lot in Soi Suan Mali as my site, which agrees with my concept, ‘A long-forgotten building to a new life-long neighbourhood’.
The BMA Suan Mali Parking Building is an 8 floors building with an opaque facade that is currently used as a monthly parking facility. Despite its potential, the space is unused, with only half of its capacity. This creates a great opportunity for adaptive reuse, changing a lifeless building into a revitalisation space that serves an individual and societal purpose.
For the physical structure, my main goal is to create a place that feels lively. By reducing the building’s bulky and visible facade, which opens up more free space for natural ventilation and light, this not only improves the surroundings generally but also keeps the standard of cleanliness and wellbeing in the area.
The name “Baan Aun Jai” means a sense of relief and comfort that goes beyond just a typical shelter. It not only revitalises the long-forgotten building by utilising the potential of interior design, but also gives hope and new life for residents. For that reason, Baan Aun Jai is a project in which I attempt to transform the word ‘homeless’ into ‘home’.
