PROJECT: HANDS ON ART CLASS, GALLERY & ARTIST RESIDENCY

AREA: 7,000 sq.m.
Art has been a part of human history for tens of thousands of centuries with 5 main benefits for human beings which are emotional and psychological well-being, cultural expression and communication, intellectual and cognitive development, social and community connections and economic societal development. Thus, art is one of the essentials for society, that has been evolving through the ages including Thailand’s.
Art can be classified into 4 main types, and one of them is visual art.
Thailand is a country that is widely known in many aspects. Such as rich culture, delicious cuisines and friendly people; but one of the things that Thailand has not been able to achieve is to be well-known for visual art. However, even though Thai art industry may not be world class, that doesn’t mean there’s no quality artist in Thailand. In fact, there are so many talented and hard-working artists in Thailand who have been working on their art pieces. Therefore, there should be more support for the creation of art. There are some groups of people trying to be a part of art industry development in Thailand, but it seems like the support has never been enough to elevate the numbers in the industry. Therefore, Hands On Art Class, Gallery and Artist Residency has the intention to impel the visual art industry in Thailand.
Hands On Art Class, Gallery and Artist Residency is a renovation project of Tobacco Factory warehouse 1 which belongs to Tobacco Authority of Thailand; located on Charoen Krung Road, Wat Phraya Krai, Bang Kho Laem, Bangkok. The project runs on the intension to support art industry in Thailand; starting by letting artists be able to have a place where artists can exchange knowledge and skill giving opportunity to artists without restriction of nationality to participate in the artist residency. In exchange, the artists who apply for the program will have to teach art classes, work on their own creative pieces, and exhibit them in the gallery.
Hands On café, art supply store, office rental, art class are parts of the project that support Hands On gallery, artist residency and artist studio financially; so that the project will be able to run on its own.
Riverside area is parted into 3 spaces which are Artist Residency (river side living area), Riverside Area and Gallery; to maximize the usage of the area next to Chao Phraya River.
