PROJECT: INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR HATYAI TRAIN STATION AND TRAIN HOTEL

LOCATION: SONGKHLA, THAILAND AREA: 9510 sq.m.
Among those transportation-variety, “ TRAIN ” has been the very first choice of all vehicles to make your journey memorable by all means. As we all make a journey for different reason and from different perspective. Some travel to explore(Traveler), some travel for work(Businessman), some travel to experience(Tourist), or even take a train for a living. Above all, the idea of moving from place to place from time to time tell us that “destination won’t tell a story better than along the way.”
Forasmuch considering the importance of having the railroad. TRAIN STATION spontaneously brought up the exciting question to this thesis proposal which is “ Can train station be more than a transit spot for passenger and goods but to give a bit sense of place and character of its own context throughout architecture?”
SRT known as State Railway of Thailand was founded in 1890 and has been in every age ever since. In order to keep the railway running in a good business, the station must take the responsibility to provide supportive facility for passenger.
To begin with, the location comes first in a way of being a model and having an effective impact of change. Hatyai Train Station was chosen by three factors as following. First, Hatyai is one of the biggest city in Southern part of Thailand which gives ability to expand the economy and help bring the neighbor up by well-organized transportation hub. Second, Hatyai Train Station is an international junction where Padang Besar Railway from Malaysia directly connected to,hence, gives potential to the location to attract foreign tourist and good opportunity for cultural exchange. And most importantly, the multi-cultural that lives in Hatyai people harmoniously.
Mentioning about the multi-cultural, Thai-Chinese-Muslim, bring us back to the character of its own context where local station can represent the way local people actually is and live. Hatyai Junction with the concept Cultural junction is the core idea of thesis proposal. In order to make a functional and proper station, user-research and analysis is done first since station is a public space where universal design is need. Besides, existing user in this specific area composes of different way of living, routine and believes.
Firstly, the idea is applied by re-planning to help user organized their best route both arrivals and departure. Secondly, providing variety of seats and activities to support all behavior-usage.Lastly, giving sense of place by combining local material such as Koh-Yor terracotta tile(Koh-Yor is a city in Songkhla), pattern that related to Islamic pattern and Chinese Pattern together introducing both local and traveler to take a glace of the new Hatyai Train Station.
