PROJECT: EASTERN THAILAND MARINE FISHERIES RESEARCH & LEARNING CENTER
STUDENT : NATTHAMON KAEWMIJEEN
LOCATION: RAYONG, THAILAND
AREA:  4,982 sq.m.

Eastern Thailand Marine Fisheries Research, located in Ban Phe subdistrict, Rayong province, was founded to support sustainable fisheries in Thailand. The center researches aquatic species, seawater conditions, and fishing tools that suit the environment. It also runs marine species conservation programs, trains local fishers, and hosts school activities to educate young people about fisheries and marine life.

Eastern Thailand Marine Fisheries Research & Learning Center was established to raise awareness about marine conservation and sustainable fisheries. By showing how human actions impact the sea, the center helps young people develop a deeper understanding of marine conservation. It also supports nearby communities and helps local fishers sustain their profession and culture. The center acts as a learning hub and museum, encouraging people to value and help restore a healthy ocean.

The project consists of four main sections: museum, commercial, workshop, and the office area of Eastern Thailand Marine Fisheries Research.

The museum is designed as an interactive space for the center’s main target audience—local youth—and features five zones. The first zone, Le Hi (Seaside Wonders), presents marine habitats and the sea areas along Thailand’s eastern coast. The second zone, Ork Rua (Set Sail), introduces types of boats and fishing tools through interactive games. The third zone, Ban Phe Dao Den (Ban Phe’s Marine Stars), showcases Rayong’s star marine animals. The fourth zone, Jarn Nai Puean (Which Plate Is Polluted?), offers a game-based learning experience where visitors choose seafood at a market and cook it in a virtual kitchen. The final zone, Le Sai (Clear Seas, Bright Future), highlights different marine restoration approaches and features a learning game for sorting various types of waste.

In addition to the museum, the center offers a range of programs dedicated to marine conservation and sustainable fisheries, further enriching the learning experience and fostering a deeper connection to the sea. The commercial area includes a seafood restaurant that serves fresh, seasonal catches from local fishers, a souvenir shop offering locally made gifts and snacks, and a seafood market selling both fresh and cooked seafood operated by the fishing community. The workshop section invites visitors to explore the fisher’s lifestyle, take part in seasonal fishing trips, observe and identify marine animals, learn about aquatic nurseries, and contribute to marine restoration efforts. Meanwhile, the office area, part of the center’s original site, has been upgraded with improved staff facilities and expanded to include training and seminar rooms accessible to local fishers.
