PROJECT: MUSIC HOUSE AND LEARNING CENTER
STUDENT : PIMPISUTH APAIPIM
LOCATION: NAKORNPATHOM, THAILAND
AREA: 3330 sq.m.
One-hour driving away from Bangkok downtown area, there is Mahidol university in Salaya, Nakornpathom where students and educational staffs generally live and have a period of their lifes around the campus. Nevertheless, entertainment facilities or places for students' enjoyment are not various and fit group activities. Students there go and enjoy their free time out of the campus area, thus the community of Mahidol crews is not firm and branching out. Coming up with re-community, new space for spending fun and relaxing moment is obvious to be in the campus. Since Mahidol university is well known for their musical education and music is the easiest entertainment to join and enjoy, MUSIC HOUSE AND LEARNING CENTER is going to be located there.
South east Asian music museum is where the project would be. The existing building is near the main entrance of Mahidol university and a campus tram stop is right in front of the building; therefore, neighbourhood would be able to access and join the community.
Main idea of this music community is encouraging people to express themselves and embrace every difference of everyone. Every space in this project tends to be a space for gathering or using space, furniture or other architectural elements at the same time then people can have fun and enjoy music moment together. The enclosures and panels are either glass or perforated materials letting people both see and to be seen. Another key point is to maintain the precious collections as function of old building, a museum. The important and highlight of collections would be remained and exhibited, blending into new spaces and activities such as show wall and exhibited along the corridor. This strategy would influence on people’s aspect to the way music plays an important role in people lifestyle and society since historic time.
Design concept of each space is diverse. Firstly, welcoming area and music club & library. In
order to present music as the very first area that users would experience, the elements and patterns used in the space tend to resemble music element such as piano, staff, music wave. The secondary colours, orange, purple and green, are the 3 main color for this project representing the combination of melody and rhythm working together to make music.
Secondly, music store & service. As people express themselves through music, music instruments also represent the character of its owner. Place where people typically show their music taste is music festival, dressing up and shouting out music style they like. The store is set as grass field with colourful fabric and textile hanging above.
Thirdly, music rental service. The service is for users in this community who just come to play and enjoy music here as the first intention to be a new entertainment facility not to train like professional musician. Warehouse is referenced in this space, music instruments as goods waiting to express like people use music as a tool to express their feeling. Various coloured expanded metal and perforated metal panels are in order to make partitions of each type of music instruments.
Lastly, music room. Entire floor is music studio to rehearsal or take some music lesson. Lighting is dim and built up the contrast of brightness between corridor and in the music room through triangle-form window as if the outsider is a listener and the one in the room is a music performer in the spotlight.
