PROJECT: KATHU MINING MUSEUM AND CULTURAL CENTER PHUKET
STUDENT : NAJTAYA TEANTONG
LOCATION: PHUKET, THAILAND
AREA: 3,200 sq.m.

Mining in Phuket has a long and rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Industry has contributed significantly to the local economy, providing jobs and income for the population. After the mine was abandoned, Kathu municipality came to develop the site into a mining museum which is surrounded by naturally rich hills. The museum contains exhibitions and artifacts, including equipment, tools, and photographs. However, it has been established for 16 years since 2007, the exhibitions might not be up to date anymore.

This new era of museums is not only entertaining, but also educational. By combining technology with traditional exhibits, museums are able to communicate complex information in a more accessible and engaging way. Visitors can learn about history, science, and culture in a way that feels like play. Now, visitors can engage with history through virtual reality, augmented reality, and other digital technologies.

Since the fusion of technology and history has brought about a new era of museums. As we move forward, the possibilities for museum experiences are endless. With advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, and other emerging technologies, museums have the potential to become even more interactive and immersive. The future of museums is exciting, and it's only just beginning.

Exterior - Phuket's architecture reflects a blend of Thai, Chinese, and Portuguese styles, reflecting the island's historical and cultural diversity. Since I want to modernize the term of Phuket architecture, the façade was designed by mixing traditional Phuket -style houses with modern materials such as metal, concrete, and stone.

The beginning - The exhibitions start with a manual mining model, the screen shows a summary story of the workers panning tin nearby the river. This shows what the beginning of Phuket's mining looks like.

Connected to the surrounding - For the next step, since the museum is surrounded by hills where mining was there in the past, the audiences now can see through the windows that are engraved with mining information, and see what mining exactly looks like in the past.

Bigger mine - The thing that shows the golden era of Phuket's mining is when mining took a big step up. Since there were many immigrations moving into Phuket, The mine rails were created to support the number of workers and the demand for tin in macroeconomics. There's a model of mine rails showing the audiences how did they look like.

Demonstration - The tins melting method is as important as finding them. This room will show you the methods of tin melting since they come from the hills to the smelting kiln. By the moving model in the display, the audiences can see the whole story from the beginning to the end.

The marketplace - Next are the cultural zones, which contained a market, a parade, and a city. Where you can see what Phuket looked like in the past. The traditional Thai-style houses, colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, and grand Chinese mansions can be found throughout the island, particularly in the Old Town area.

Mini Town - Since most of the workers in the mine immigrated from China, there's no way not to have the Chinese culture blend in with Thai culture. This zone will show you the parade in which the Thai-Chinese celebrate their Chinese New Year

Phuket F&B Café - Last but not least, since the old museum doesn't have any food place, I decided to design a cafe where the audience can relax after the tour, and also the outsider can also have their meals here, which can help the museum earn more money.

Workshop - Above the cafe, there is a workshop room where children and parents can spend time together. The program is making watercolors from ores or rocks which can be found all over the place. And that’s the end of the tour.
