The role of the temple in Thai society, apart from being a spiritual anchor, have another important role as a community center. In the past, the temple was an educational space, knowledge resource, meeting area for community activities, and etc. Wat Khanon (Nang Yai) itself, as a community center, has 3 important roles; being a religious place, preserving Nang Yai, and generating income and careers for people in the community. However, in the present day, with social context that has changed, less people pay attention to the temple and Nang Yai, which was once considered an important art with a long history and is starting to fade away.
With this Thesis, I want people to recognize the values and the important role of the temple and Nang Yai through the improvement of the program, architecture, and interior architecture and also discover the new possibilities for both to be modernized and revived to the community center of Wat Khanon community again.
The preservation of Nang Yai at Wat Khanon was established from the cooperation between the temple, the school and community. Wat Khanon is not only a source of knowledge about Nang Yai art, but also passing on the knowledge from generation-to-generation through people in the community and students of Wat Khanon School. Wat Khanon, which is an important tourist attraction in Ratchaburi province, attracts tourists to pay Nang Yai performance a visit and spend their money on local products which generate income for people in the community and extend the existence of Nang Yai. Since the introduction of new social contexts and modernized technology over the years, it has made Nang Yai less entertaining compared to what it was in the past. Therefore, Nang Yai has become less popular and is starting to fade away. Currently in Thailand there are only 3 groups that still perform Nang Yai. Wat Khanon is one of them, which still recognizes the value and importance of Nang Yai and is determined to preserve it.
In order to improve the architecture, for the exterior renovation, I will still keep the value and identity of the Thai traditional architecture, by preserving the original buildings as much as I can. That said, I chose to add the new extension in parts of the museum and theater to make the buildings more functional for new programs and designed a new façade for demolished parts. Renovation of function inside the building was applied to create the suitable function for both Nang Yai and temple, and used technology to help convey the story of Nang Yai through the museum which portrays the history, the characteristics, and artistic constituents of Nang Yai. Moreover, the surrounding area within the temple is transformed to green space providing more public space for people in the community.
As for the improvement of the program related to Nang Yai, it is recommended that the new program should have the cooperation between artists from Wat Khanon and various artists to collaborate on working to create a new Nang Yai art with an achievement to modernize Nang Yai and create new possibilities for Nang Yai art. The new program consists of Nang Yai Museum that will convey the story of the Nang Yai Wat Khanon, Wat Khanon Theatre for traditional Nang Yai performances and contemporary performances, Nang Yai School a training grounds for Nang Yai of Wat Khanon group and other performers, and Dan Khanon Market a festival area for art and cultural events which open up the opportunity for people in the community to sell products and receive income from tourists.
This design proposal aims to revive the role of the temple and Nang Yai. Through the change of the program, architecture, and interior architecture I believe that it will be able to manage the function and the area usage within the temple to be appropriate for preservation purpose of Nang Yai. Furthermore, it will be a public space for people in the community and revive the temple to have an important role as a community center again.
