PROJECT: INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR RONGSRI BREWING EXPERIENCE AND COMMUNITY CENTER
STUDENT : PHOTHIWAN CHAOCHARAD
LOCATION: BANGKOK, THAILAND
AREA: 3,150 sq.m.
The old rice mill, which is over 100 years old, is currently being transformed from its original architecture into a craft beer center that showcases the distinctive local craftsmanship of Thailand. The project's main objective is to preserve the original environment and context of Thailand by using local raw materials and incorporating the original components of the old rice mill building. This initiative aims to enhance and promote the Thai craft beer industry.
The project, known as the Thai Craft Beer Learning Center, will serve as a destination for craft beer enthusiasts. It will operate as both a producer and distributor of craft beer, manufacturing the beer within its own factory. As part of this endeavor, a brand of craft beer products will be created under the name RONGSRI BREWERY
Rongsri Brewery represents a Thai craft beer product that embodies the essence of Thainess, creating a heavenly experience. The name is derived from the original location, the Min Buri Market Mill, to convey the value and historical context of the building. However, the aim is to make the brand more accessible to the general public while maintaining its unique qualities.
Beer is one of the oldest and continuously developed beverages in the world. It has a rich history of variety in beer types, supplementary ingredients, and production processes, which are diverse and easy to consume. The price is not high, beer is accessible and popular among people everywhere, and it has high sales in almost every region of the world. Therefore, it is an essential contributor to the economy. In many countries, beer has an important role.
The old mill in Minburi market is a mill with a history of over one hundred years. It was established in the past when the Min Buri area played a crucial role in rice farming in Bangkok. To handle the substantial amount of rice cultivation each year, Min Buri was home to numerous large mills. As a result of immigration, Muslims, Mon, and Chinese individuals found employment as laborers in these mills. Additionally, the mill is situated near a canal. In the past, the Saen Saeb Canal served as an important waterway for transportation in Bangkok.
Craft beer refers to homemade beer that is characterized by its craftsmanship. Craft beer is an alcoholic beverage that offers a wide variety of flavors, colors, and alcohol content. It is an alternative beer choice that is popular among beer drinkers. The new program within this project aims to create a space that serves as a community hub for brewers and drinkers in order to produce quality craft beer. The program will develop and control production to international standards while also promoting creativity by experimenting with recipes and supporting the exchange of knowledge to advance production.
The project focuses on crafting and distributing complex products, specifically craft beers, which involve a detailed production process and generate significant waste throughout production and consumption stages. The aim is to utilize waste materials from the old mill, such as old wood, old zinc, and old machinery, and combine them with new elements, thereby incorporating both the old and the new aspects of the original building. This approach aligns with the principles of a sustainable or circular economy.
The concept of a circular economy involves the circular use of natural resources within the value chain and emphasizes efficient waste management, raw material utilization, expired product handling, and energy regeneration within the system through appropriate processes. It also prioritizes waste management from production to consumption by reintroducing previously produced and consumed raw materials into new production processes (upcycling) or reusing them through recycling.
The circular economy principle will be applied to the premium production business, specifically in the area of beer brewing. The aim is to sustainably produce, distribute, and process beer, taking a holistic approach that encompasses environmental, social, and economic dimensions.
