PROJECT: ONSON ISAN CULTURAL HOTEL KHONKAEN
STUDENT : POONNAPA WATCHARASINAPORN
LOCATION: KHONKAEN, THAILAND
AREA: 5,738 sq.m.
The more time passes these days, the more culture is eroded. We all comprehend how valuable cultures are, but not everyone commits to preserving it. In fact, cultures have been a significant determinant of creative society and economic growth. ISAN, or Northeastern Thailand, is an example of Thailand's most valuable culture, with its own distinct identity that no other culture can match.The project envisions the possibility of changing the world's perception of Isan with a more modern and intriguing notion.
When it comes to Isan, most tend to associate Isan with drought and poverty, yet in actuality, it has been the main pushing force behind creativity. Poverty, in other respects, can be counted as Isan's treasure. Various distinctive handicrafts such as Rattan and Bamboo Crafts; kra-tip, and Textile are also included in the story of Isan's leisure such as Molam dance or even about cuisines such as pickling or Ya-dong. As a consequence, the proposal adopted architectural design to enhance the existing Cultural Capital's values of Isan.
The initiative is situated in Khonkaen, which is a popular tourist site for those interested in Thai culture. It's an attempt to shift the image of the hotel from a conference hotel to a Creative and Cultural Destination with creative, cultural, and high-value services that include Creative people, Creative places, and Creative products. The project reflected Isan Heritage by enabling visitors to experience the Treasure of Isan through the design, and story of Isan people. It is about the use of material and tectonic detail as depicted through handicrafts, which included Lifestyle and local wisdom as shown by the everyday lives of Isan. Furthermore, the design is concentratedly enhanced on creating a phenomenological approach with multi-sensory experience that is expressed through diverse emotions and feelings, whilst gaining new experience and learning the culture of Isan in a contemporary way, hence also developing the internal community together.
The predominant material usage is inspired by the customs of using ordinary rustic and local material, but twisted in a creatively new way that creates value and worth at the same time. The design integrates these materials with contemporary materials such as steel and glass to create a meaningful yet intuitively “imperfect” way that would emphasize mainly on the aesthetic values of perfect imperfection.
