LOCATION: NONTHABURI, THAILAND

Over the last decades, the issue of aging society has been given a lot of attention, with the ever-growing elderly population, Thailand has already entered an aging society in 2021, prompting various organizations to be vigilant in dealing with the change in the society. For some organization, like the Nonthaburi Municipality, has long since been prepared for the change.
The Life Quality Development Center Nonthaburi Municipality is a center established in 2013 with the purpose of providing welfare services and a variety of activities suitable for senior citizens to encourage the elderly to spend their free time productively in a way that’ll improve their quality of life.
The center was able to provide satisfactory results, but there are still issues that should be addressed in order to enhance the way quality of life can be developed. Therefore, this program aims to develop the potential of the center in the form of program and interior architectural design to be consistent with the elderly in the present and future, pushing the center to be the model of the elderly service center.
The project’s concept is Reimaging Aging, aiming to change the image and perception that is given towards the elderly. People often think of the elderly as being inactive and needed care and protection to the point that it limited the elderly from having a sense of self which is an age-old belief in the society, but with the change of generation, the characteristics and behaviors of the elderly will also change, so should the image of aging.
The existing programs in the Center are good for improving life quality, but the building itself does not do so much in helping creating a healthy environment with the building stacking on itself, the building has poor lighting and ventilation. Therefore, a well-ventilated open space is added to improve the interior environment as well as making connection between activity spaces and space in between. The existing activity programs are regrouped and rearrange into 6 zones, active, social, quiet, music, learning, and a newly proposed program, tech support zone. The zones are categorized by how the space can function instead of by programs, in order for the spaces to be flexible with possible changes of the activity programs in the future.
Materials used for the design have the concept of helping creating an active environment with a modern feeling to it, but are still cozy enough for the elderly to feel comfortable moving in the space by using green, yellow and orange, colors that give active energy, combing with shades of warm wood.
