PROJECT: INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR SHIFT SONG WAT, BANGKOK
STUDENT : SMITA RONGDEJPRATEEP
LOCATION: BANGKOK, THAILAND
AREA: 4,260 sq.m.
Parallel to the Chao Praya River, Song Wat, a historic road, is filled with mix of century-old shophouses where buildings hold historical and emotional values.
Song Wat is known for an old trade area since the reign of the fifth (King Chulalongkorn). For Song Wat, it means “drawn by the king”, because of the suggestion from the King Chulalongkorn that a road should be added to the area. Then he wrote the line with pencil on the map. Song Wat then developed to function as main access to water transport in the area along the road and became a center of import and export of agricultural products and seafood.
Located on Song Wat road, Bangkok, Thailand, the existing site of the project consist of 23 shophouses, 1 house and 1 warehouse. The existing building were originally an agricultural products warehouse which belongs to Chao Sua Tik, a Chinese merchant who owns most of the estates in Song Wat area. With the changes of times, the buildings were no longer use as warehouse and become abandoned.
Nowadays, young urban creatives go to the old town as the destination for relaxation and working remotely at the same time. Considering from the reasons mentioned above, there is a potential to turn these abandoned buildings into an accommodation and facilities with a unique atmosphere and intangible experience of the old town. Our project, The Shift Song Wat, is 16 guestrooms with facilities built into a group of existing buildings. The main design approach is to contrast the historical context of the site through new designs to reveal true colors of Song Wat. Because of the uniqueness in each building, the variety of design methods in each space, for example, guestrooms are focus on preserving the existing wall and bringing sunlight to the interior space that used to be narrow and dark while all day dining restaurant is focuses on adding a new to reflect the old roof structure.
In addition to the design approach, the visitors can sense historical value, emotional value and sense of being warehouse of the buildings in various ways.
