PROJECT: BAAN CHAN PINE RETREAT, CHIANG MAI
STUDENT: TANAPON NAIYAPO
LOCATION: CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
AREA: 2,240 SQ.M.
In today's world, urban life is increasingly stressful, leading people to seek remote destinations for travel and relaxation—places where they can immerse themselves in nature and rejuvenate both body and mind through forest bathing. Kalayaniwattana, Chiang Mai, home to one of Thailand’s largest natural pine forests, offers an ideal setting. The area is rich with the enchanting culture and traditions of the indigenous Pgakenyaw people.
Baan Chan Pine Retreat is a design initiative aimed at developing the forestry plantation for tourism under the Forest Industry Organization (FIO), located in Kalayaniwattana, Chiang Mai. The project includes various accommodations, and the Huai Chan Reservoir is situated at the back of the site. However, the buildings within the project were constructed at different times, resulting in a lack of architectural cohesion across the site. Additionally, there is a shortage of activities that could attract new groups of tourists, particularly those with higher purchasing power and an interest in nature. For these reasons, a redesign was initiated to improve the project's overall image.
Kalayaniwattana District in Chiang Mai Province stands out as an ideal destination for such a retreat. The cool climate throughout the year enhances the experience, providing visitors with a refreshing alternative to the heat of the cities. Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, Kalayaniwattana is steeped in rich cultural heritage. The area is inhabited by the Pgakenyaw people, an indigenous Karen ethnic group known for their harmonious relationship with nature and their unique traditions.
Visitors to Kalayaniwattana can do more than simply enjoy the natural scenery—they could experience the authentic way of life of the Pgakenyaw people. Through local crafts, agricultural practices, and cultural exchanges, tourists can gain a deeper understanding of sustainable living and traditional wisdom that has been passed down through generations. This blend of natural splendor and cultural richness makes Kalayaniwattana a truly enchanting destination for those seeking both physical renewal and meaningful connection.
