PROJECT: INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FOR DOMESTIC TERMINAL CHIANG MAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
STUDENT: THORANON PHEERAYAKOSES
LOCATION: CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
AREA: 43,000 sq.m.
Chiang Mai International Airport is the 4th airport that has the largest passenger amount per year in Thailand. This airport currently accommodates more than 10.2 million passengers per year, which exceeds the airport capacity. Thus, Airports of Thailand PLC. (AOT), the airport’s operator, established the development plan to increase the capacity of the airport to 16.5 million passengers per year by building a new international terminal building, then renovating the existing domestic and international terminal building into the new domestic terminal building. Therefore, this thesis project aims to renovate the interior architecture of domestic terminal design to resolve the crossed, congested circulation of departure and arrival passengers issue with a new layout planning, also, to provide more commercial spaces for passengers to spend their free time before boarding. This new option is designed to provide the new space, usage, and technology that encourages fast and effective operation and represents the identity of Chiang Mai’s traditional culture. Wood, which is the local and sustainable material, is used as the main material in the design, along with the wickerwork, Chiangmai’s traditional craftsmanship, to support the local craftsmen, also increase the income of the local community.
The interior of the terminal is designed by using the rattan wicker panel covered inside the wood frame as a ceiling. Each space has different patterns of wicker ceiling design relating to the existing structure to cover the mechanical systems and become lighting features of each space, also to create a way-finding for passengers. Besides defining the direction of circulation, these ceilings create a sense of Chiangmai, a place of craftsmanship, and its background through local material to make a good impression for the visitors. Inside the terminal, self-check-in kiosks and automatic baggage and relaxed before boarding, underneath the delightful combination of tangible traditional culture and modern architecture of this airport.
