It is certain that mental disorders is now one of the major health issue, arising in every part of Thailand. The research shows that the psychiatric service is related to the alleviation in suicidal cases number. In contrary, there is only twenty government-run psychiatric institutes available. One of them is ‘Galya Rajanagarindra institute’, the first forensic psychiatric center in Thailand.
Since the opening in 1971, some of the service areas, for instance the electricity or the interior finishes in inpatient buildings, haven’t been repaired causing the troublesome in providing the services and developing an unsuitable healing environment. Mental Illness can be healed not only by medications and psychotherapy alone, but also by the environment patients chose to surround themselves with. The objective of this proposal project is to mainly restore the utilities to fully function, and by finding the fitting interior design for all users could result in a solution for a future of psychiatric institutes.
Analysis from the research and interviews with both patients and medical team finds that suitable psychiatric environment is a light and airy space with safety, either from self-harm or the harms from other patients. Additionally, the further inquiry about treatments and services indicates that talking is mainly used and thus requires a certain level of trusts between the patients and the medical team. The architectural design could then act as a tool to assist in therapy along with being a comfort zone for the patients to reside in.
Based on these information, the interior elements were carefully chosen to create the proper healing environment for everyone, and are placed within the space planning developed from the studies of institute’s schedule. The interior decorations aim to experience with the perception of the users, along with the objection of creating a comfort zone or quoted from patients, ‘a home’.
The home-like environment is created by the usage of indigenous materials, such as dark brown wood with stucco paint. The lighting, especially in the inpatient department, is designed to avoid the direct light with the significantly help of the curve ceiling that evenly distribute the lighting. The light and airy spaces were not only achieved by the space planning, but also through the opening of voids which let in the natural lighting and scenery, improving the overall interior ambience.
The way to make patients get acquainted with the hospital enough for them to comfortably accept the treatment is through the material the resting area, and to avoid the depression state developing from staying in one space for a prolonged period of time. For psychiatric patients, the minimum length of inpatient stay is around two months. With the safety precautions in mind, the furniture are carefully designed to prevent the harms that might occur from the suicidal attention, such as round edged, no hanging rail, upholster, to name a few.
