Center of Wellness Care by Rajabhat Suansunandha University is located in Samut Songkram, surrounded by good quality natural environment which the guests can enjoy both the inside and outside perspectives of the building. This building was built in 2007 to become a hospital. Due to the National Strategy and Wellness Tourism Trends, the purpose of this building has changed. It has been renovated since then to become a new destination of wellness tourism in Thailand.
The wellness program services mostly foreign tourists from China and Europe. However, the center also serves students from the College of Allied Heath by providing facilities for practicing, training and apprenticing, activities at which form part of the school
’s curriculum. The main users and occupants are tourists, and the sub user are students and college staff.
The wellness centre contains an organic restaurant and commercial kitchen, onsen baths, a pool and spa, a yoga studio, thai massage rooms, a workshop room, classrooms and staff offices. Due to the varied functions within the building, the optimisation of circulation and program zoning was paramount to the operation and offerings of this center. The circulation was utilised to separate the public use and guests’ front of house experience to that of the back of house functions and private rooms.
For this project, it was chosen a section of the centre to renovate to rejuvenate the building identity to promote the sense of well-being and calm atmosphere that this centre offers to their customers and staff.
The refurbishment was influenced by the idea of the
“restorative environment”, a design concept derived from three chosen elements of the natural environment found in Samut Songkhram – water, mountains and wood. The interior design and finishes are an interpretation these three elements in varied ways to simulate the sense of being embraced by nature when customers walk through the entrance. Moreover, this enhances the local sense of Samut Songkhram and contributes to the street presence and economy.
All of the architectural element, new and existing, improves the attractiveness of the building and business which will assist Samut Songkhram in becoming the new destination of wellness tourism.
