Tanya Samui is a Holistic Healthcare institute, established in 2554 BE by Tanya
Samui Social Enterprise Company Limited. It was originated as a small project with an objective to become a place for body and mind detoxification, renovated from the old houses located in Koh Samui, Surat Thani, Thailand, which is one of the most famous tourist destinations, resulting in numbers and variety of visitors in this project, including tourists, Thais, monks and nuns.
Despite the main objective, Tanya Samui mainly focused on body detox through colon cleanse programs using natural methods to cure and prevent illness caused by toxins and other harmful residues that are coagulated in the body. Making mind detox a minor focus as it would happen in result of body wellness, and Buddhist beliefs and practices. And since most visitors are tourists from different countries and religious, using religious beliefs can cause misunderstandings and can become controversial part of this project.
Due to all of these consequences: the problem of not meeting it’s objective, the rise in number of visitors, the variety of visitors, and the limitation of the old buildings, the new Tanya Samui project was created on the land right next to the old one, in order to serve better as a place that helps stimulate body and mind detox in the future.
As described above, the approaches of this project can be divided into 2 parts: program approach and design approach.
First, program approach: as described, Tanya Samui is well-known for colon detoxing, but since the main objective of this project is to detox both mind and body of the visitors, more functions were added into this project. The added functions would mainly serve the mind detox part using only one of the core idea of Buddhism teachings which is practicing mindfulness, instead of using whole religious believes, to dissolve religious boundaries between this project and users. Functions that will be used as method of practicing mindfulness are meditation, yoga, pilates, fitness, and art workshop spaces.
Moreover, courses were also added into this project, since colon detox was the only course they had. In this project, 3 courses will be provided to be more specific on the aims of each users. These 3 courses consist of Juice detox, Body cleanse, Intense cleanse. Juice detox is a beginner-level course for those who wants to try juice fasting in order to become healthier. Body cleanse is an intermediate-level course for those who has interests in juice fasting and colon detoxing. Intense cleanse is an advanced-level course for those with illness and wants to cure using natural method like fasting and colon detoxing, but more intense.
Second, design approach: the main concept of this project is “organic living” describing both original concept of Tanya Samui, which is to heal mentally and physically using natural methods, and design concept, which will focus on applying nature into architecture to build up healing spaces. Based on the research, healing spaces have certain qualities that can help users to feel better and heal faster, and those qualities are
- engagement between people, and engagement with environment or nature
- good air quality and ventilation
- sense related: touch, smell, sound, and sight, e.g., views, materials, and lighting
These qualities of healing space and the idea of organic living lead to design that care for both users and environment, and rely more on nature of the site.
Since this project is located in Koh Samui, which has lots of climate changes and strong wind, more openings were added and most spaces were designed in open plan layout, letting more natural light into the space, and enabling some indoor spaces to transform into semi-outdoor spaces, in order to connect users with surroundings, ventilate better and lessen air conditioner usage. And also, materials and elements used in both exterior and interior are mainly crafted from nature, e.g., rammed earth walls, hydrated lime plaster walls, coconut shells, rocks, and woods giving the sense of nature and comfort to the space.
