PROJECT: INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FOR HOTEL XIN 1966 IN NAKHONLUANG BUILDING, BANGKOK
STUDENT : PUNIKA BUNCHONGKHIEN
LOCATION: BANGKOK, THAILAND
AREA: 3,880 sq.m.

XIN 1966 is a soon-to-be boutique hotel initiated by Mrs. Phanit who is the owner of a 70-year-old abandoned building named Nakhonluang. This building was located on Charoenkrung road in the area of Yaowarat, a well-known tourist attraction of Bangkok and originally used as an office of Nakhonluang Life Insurance Company. After its close-down, the office was then turned into an electronics store run by Mrs. Phanit’s family and some areas were rented as Chinese ceramics shops. However, the building was later left unused until present day. With the intention of starting a new business, the owner has decided to make use of Nakhonluang building, which is in the prime location easily accessed by public transportation and turn it into a boutique hotel where the main concept is to represent the history of Yaowarat community as well as Thai-Chinese people’s way of life through both architecture and design of the interior with ‘Museum Hotel’ as the main keyword.

The objective of Hotel XIN 1966 Bangkok project is to revive Nakhonluang office building to a new purpose, a boutique hotel, and simultaneously preserve outstanding features of the existing architecture.
To achieve the main concept ‘Museum Hotel’, elements of the interior design were inspired by the era the building was still in use, the 1960s. The style of the Sixties was reflected through the shapes, materials, colors and furniture. Some antique objects were adapted into new uses and displayed harmoniously with other design elements. Old existing walls were presented at least on one plane in each of the guest rooms. Moreover, to express Thai-Chinese culture and people’s way of life, the distinguishing characteristics from Charoenchai, a 100-year-old market community in Yaowarat, were interpreted to interior appearance since Charoenchai is well-known for its Chinese paper cut craft and appliances for Chinese festival, especially Moon Festival.
With the combination of Nakhonluang building’s history and remarkable features from Charoenchai community, Hotel XIN 1966 will be able to represent identities of Thai-Chinese people in Yaowarat through the image of ‘Museum Hotel’.
