As Henri Lefebvre (1999) and Yi-fu Tuan (1997) state, space can be socially and bodily produced. In this respect, space can be defined by bodily movement and social interactions rather than by architectural elements or functions. It means that one’s spatial experience is shaped in the realm of everyday life within the social and cultural context. How does space determine and respond to such repetitive activity? Keunhye Lee explores the relationship between the body and space to develop a phenomenological understanding of space, focusing on Korean floor-based culture. Lee also develops spatial practice to explore the social identity of Korean floor-based culture through patterns of social practice. A series of spatial practices demonstrate various spatial experiences as a means to provide not only a bodily understanding of space but also the social relations that are the fabric of ordinary life. It demonstrates ways of defining the spatial boundary through performing daily activity. This talk provides conceptual ideas, as ways of exploring the embodied experiential and socially situated aspects of space.
